I understand them going with a touch screen on the Framework 12 for art students, but why then compromise the whole package with a display with only 70% sRGB coverage? Makes no sense to me... 🙁

Vertical integration vs. do it yourself efficiency. Economies of scale are a killer advantage.
The really damning part is that you could get the higher-end Neo (with 512GB of storage and Touch ID) for $699 - so it basically obliterates the Framework for $50 less.
My wife has a Framework 12. She wanted to support the mission, and seems to like the device but she doesn't really use it much. I went with the Framework 16 late last year, thankfully right before the RAM prices went insane, and that thing slaps, in spite of its minor imperfections. For a smaller repair-friendly device, I pre-ordered a Braxtech OpenSlate Pro, which on paper was a far better value than the Framework 12. Hope to see you review it one day!
Framework was never the budget option, even the other models aren't competitive in price compared to other laptops imo

The benefits from Apple's economies of scale are huge and a company like framework simply cannot compete on cost when apple prioritizes affordability.
I didn't realize the Framework was meant to be a budget laptop. Isn't the whole idea of the Framework that it is open and modular? Apple has the advantage of massive scale so it doesn't surprise me that they can deliver a cheaper product that performs better.
I'd add two things, one the Framework has the possibility to upgrade ram and storage down the line when prices pop instead of having to buy a whole new unit. Two, a replacement Framework 12 screen is $150, the Macbook Neo screen meets that price at two years with $50/year applecare and the $50 surcharge for screen damage.
Break the screen and you will want the Framework.
I just bought my son a laptop for college and I was deciding between these two. I ended up going with the framework 12, mostly because he absolutely hates MacOS and strongly prefers Xubuntu. I'm so positive someone will get some linux distro running on the Macbook Neo at some point, but will they have it working well by fall? Unlikely. He also has a tendency to be a bit rough with tech, so I figured repairability is going to make the framework cheaper in the long run
I want a Neo but Linux is unfortunately not there yet...
After Jeff's nephew mentioned radio engineering work, I'm curious if EVERYTHING in SDR-land works or could be ported to ARM OSX.
