I think a lot of Connie's behavior makes way more sense when you view it through the lense of her parents being abusively authoritarian. She's afraid to tell her parents the truth because she doesn't feel safe telling them. They will likely overreact and she will lose her only friend. Her parents are constantly concerned with manners over her emotional wellbeing because they don't realize the way their strictness affects Connie- because she's too afraid to tell them. Its cyclical

I don't think Connie's parents being both strict and neglectful is a contradiction, that's pretty common in real life actually

I don't think characters making bad decisions equates to bad writing. If everyone only made the best possible choices then there would be no conflict. Connie imagining her parents stricter than they are, lying to them, and making the dumb choice to hop on a bus and run away all feels realistic for her character. She's book smart but she's still a kid prone to dumb choices and immaturity and I like that about her

I always read the conflict of Connie's parents intentional. Despite being controlling and authoritarian, they don't pay attention to her at all. That's not exactly a conflict of character or narrative gaslighting, it's just like (to me at least) Connie's parents see Connie as more of an idea than an actual person so they don't notice details about her. As long as she's "doing what she's supposed to be doing" they don't care to look any closer.

7:16 I think that Pearl saying "our mouth" instead of her mouth is intentional and tracks with the way she's portrayed! Alexandrite has always been different from other cross-gem fusions. Unlike Opal or Sugilite, she doesn't form a unique personality and doesn't get a weapon of her own. Instead, she reflects their personalities of Garnet, Amethyst or Pearl and simply uses the weapons of the gems and fusions that make her up. She even sometimes speaks with their voices! She's comprised of three very different gems, whose personalities clash, unable to form a cohesive whole. She's not that different from the same gem fusions we see later down the line, if you think about it! Just like them she's formed when three gems would be better together than separate, and as such, she's just that: Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, but together in one body.

5:15 That's the intentional joke of the whole situation. The Maheeswarans are so obsessed with their traditional nuclear family model, they are less upset about Greg being married to a giant, pink, four-armed woman than about the realisation, that Steven has a different type of family that doesn't follow the one-man-one-woman model. The gang is forced to throw together the most bizarre solution that makes everyone uncomfortable, before Connie's parents realise that actually, Steven's real family is not so bad afterall.

3:43 the issue with bringing Pearl is her and Greg. I don't think Pearl could pull off pretending to be married to Greg. Their relationship is WAY too messy to do that. They could probably sell co-parenting divorcees well, but not happily married. Garnet would probably be the best bet imo. She's not much of a conversationalist, but that's not actually a deal breaker.

2:24 i dunno, i kinda like that about her! it shows that despite her astuteness and resourcefulness shes still a kid who gets caught up in dumb things and makes dumb decisions because of it. i think its cool that her booksmarts do not translate to her being wise, it makes her feel flawed in a way thats real and relatable. though i definitely understand how that could be annoying to some.

Look I know that connie's parents are strict but I think they would have completely understood the fact that Steven's mother is dead if connie just said that

Am I the only one thinking this was a pretty harsh critic of the episode? Compare Fusion Cuisine to Garnet Universe (the episode where steven invents what Garnet did for the day), Fusion Cuisine is MUCH better.

I actually love Connie because of how good of representation of a different type of strict parents she is. Like, I would also call my parents strict but not in the common interpretation. I can come home until pretty late and it’s all right. Yet I pick the wrong clothe to wear to some meetup with friends and I’m being bashed. The things they do made me just feel dumb and do even dumber stuff around them, also made me lie a lot to them. And even when things are fine I feel like everything will go wrong. And these things I can really relate with Connie

I know that the get on the bus part is poorly written, but honestly that's why I like it. It's so bad it's good. It makes me laugh how out of place it is
