The missed shot into the pillow wasnt some subtle thing you might miss, it was very clearly a warning shot from a friend. And if you missed it, then you are just slow or not actually paying attention to the movie.

The book was not “Pale Fire”, but Shibumi by Trevanian. It was about a retired hitman but he was not known for killing with a pencil, but for his “naked kill” using every day items, even a folded piece of paper.

As an owner of a kimber 1911, only time it jams is if you limp wrist it (like every 1911) or if you don’t firmly chamber a round. *limp wrist meaning while firing the gun you have to almost lock your wrist trying to minimize recoil, if you don’t you limp wrist and the spring in the 1911s is so strong that it either wont fully eject the spent casing or the slide won’t travel far enough back to properly chamber the next round*

Kimber's are known to feed jam. They regularly like just one make of ammunition. Each one is finicky in the brand of ammunition it will cycle from the factory. Once a master gunsmith reworks the Kimber it will run almost any ammunition.

As a vet that used a 1911, it doesn't jam on the first round unless the slug is set wrong in the casing. I've never had my sidearm fail to feed on the first round. He checked the chamber because he is using a mag from another person and checked to see if the round fed into the chamber to check mag function.
