I believe Smoke showing up right before Remmick bit Sammy is symbolic of the saying "God might not show up when you want him but he's always on time."

I personally like to that when the Snake shows up in the film it represents how Sammie is sort of dancing wit the devil and in the Bible the Devil turns into a Snake.
