One of my favorite parts about electronics in general is how there are so many little things that when you look close at them, can be beautifully simple but genius.
I can recommend the book „Open Circuits“ where they just sliced open all of those components and took a picture of it. Really helps to understand what is actually inside most of the actuators, sensors and ICs!
Some rotary encoders also include a momentary contact switch where you push on the knob (on/off switch, etc.)

That’s why after a while your volume knob will go up and down whenever you try to turn it up because the contacts get dirty and it mixes up a and b.
Great explanation. I think you should clarify that this is an incremental encoder. Not to be confused with an absolute rotary encoder, which does give you position information 🙂

They also make them with smooth motion for precise measurement of the position of rotating devices and can be used to measure linearly as well. Even simple microcontrollers can accurately measure hundreds of steps per rotation when spinning hundreds of times per second.
