I bought an MDM locked trashcan at the end of last year that came from the Smithsonian Institute! I gave them a call, and about an hour later I got a call from the IT head saying that the serial matched and they'd unlocked it for me to use.
Honestly, the biggest issue with MDM is literally just the lack of willingness of the organization to do anything at all. I've gotten a number of MDM locked devices, and luckily, unlike iCloud lock, it actually tells you what the organization it's locked to is. As such, it is possible to get in contact with them at which point in theory they would remove it. However, the vast majority of times, this doesn't happen. You either get no response at all, the person that does respond has no idea what you're talking about and doesn't have any way to help, or the person, often incorrectly, just straight up assumes the device was removed from their possession improperly and either won't help at all, or in some cases requests you send it to back to them.
it should be as easy as emailing apple support with your proof of purchase and the serial number of the device that is clearly breaking their terms of service
So glad someone is raising awareness. I have seen sooo many devices just end up unused and scrapped because companies forgot to unlock the device before donating them. Some of those devices were less than two years old! Perfect working condition and now they're expensive paper weights. Thanks Luke.
A timeout for MDM based on the company's refresh cycle should help. That would be so simple.
iCloud lock was meant to be used in the case if your device got stolen, but then the 2nd hand market gets flooded with scams.
I worked for a large insurance company for many years. Every few years we refreshed our field fleet. We hired interns from DeVry university to plug them in, connect to network and run a Python script to remove them from our MDM and Apple ID. The corporate issued Apple products could not be activated without a AD account due to MDM which was good. I agree with RTR and Apple (as well as many other manufacturers) are doing the same thing. As someone who uses an MDM every day, I take out all devices from our MDM & take them to Apple for recycling.
Tbh the battle for right to repair isn't just "far from over," it's barely hanging on. We've had small victories, but we're not winning right now, and we need to push back way, way harder.

My school district purchased M1 MacBook Airs for every teacher k-12 in 2021. They just upgraded to the 15 inch M5 Air. It makes me wonder what the school did with all the old ones since they were obviously under MDM

The issue is, that the IT-Department of the Organisations didn't remove the device, like stated in the Apple TOS.
