The XXXTENTACION conversation always gets me, because some of his fans act like mentioning the victims or discussing what he was accused of is somehow “defaming his legacy.” That mindset is ironic, because people get angry at others for his actions. Someone being dead does not erase the fact that they could have been abusive. What’s wild is that if the situation were different if he were still alive and said something politically unpopular or offensive a lot of those same people would probably be quick to turn on him. But when it comes to abuse allegations, suddenly they want to separate the art from the person. I just think it’s strange that some people are more willing to protect a celebrity’s image than acknowledge serious issues like violence toward a partner or inappropriate behavior involving underage girls. And I already know some fans will call me a hater for saying that, but I actually used to be a big fan myself. As I got older, I started realizing that talent doesn’t excuse harmful behavior. No matter how gifted someone is, abuse is abuse, and success or fame doesn’t cancel that out

For Kobe it seems more clear that this aggression on the court that he’s massively rewarded for would also leak over into his off the court life and the sense of entitlement fame must give people.
Our society doesn’t reward integrity. We give it a nod as a great virtue but whenever someone has true integrity we are suspicious. The whistle blower, the person who doesn’t sell out, the man or woman who stands on their moral values is given a slight acknowledgment and then asked to slowly exit stage right. At best they are tolerated at worst we actively will find reasons to break them down. But the man or woman whose character is flawed and broken and is unashamed of it and has just enough tenderness for us to excuse their behavior well that person deserves our souls. We give them everything and they can do no wrong.
