A Greedy Etsy Seller Trademarks BookToks “Hot-Girls-Read” And The Community Loses Its Mind

How on earth has she been allowed to trademark that phrase?!?

She basically wasted a bunch of money to destroy her own business, because this is never going to stand against a challenge, and she's alienated most of her potential customers 🙃

I have a sticker that said Hot Girls Read on my Kindle. My paper black and white kindle from like 2016.

Some version of hot girls read has been around since I was a teenager, I'm 62.

My mom's a trademark attorney!! I showed this to her and she has no idea how this went through. That phrase is very common. This person must have way too much money. I hope people contest it and she gets it revoked.

This phrase has been used for at least 20 years. She is ridiculous and I hope she fails at business

my tinfoil hat theory is that she never cared about reading she just knew she could make a lot of money out book readers. I truly cannot imagine someone who actually has any love for reading and the community would something like this. It was only ever about the money.

I'm not on TikTok, but the BookTok drama from there is always INSANE 😅

I am part of the book community on IG and it is a dumpster fire over there. 😬 She really went and did something so audacious and greedy, considering she didn't coin any of it.

This is like the "Cafe Hon" episode of kitchen nightmares. The owner trademarked "hon", and the entire town was like "you cant trademark a cultural phrase". No one went to the restaurant until the owner dropped the trademark.

She really thought adding that she's doing this "with love" would actually help her...

How the hell did she not anticipate that people were going to be pissed about this???

This reminds me when a restaurant in Baltimore trademarked “Hon” and the owner became the most hated woman in Baltimore

The sad truth is that if she makes claims via Etsy, the OG sellers will have to remove or risk losing their shop. They will also got a ding against their store which also puts them at risk 😔

What a galloping walnut!! Looking into the process myself at one time, The attorney I was working with told me that I would have to pay a fee for EACH THING you trademark...every one of those things she listed as being trademarked has to be listed and paid for individually. You can't just do a broad category, like "retail products"...you have to pay for EACH of those individual retail items...I hope someone contests this.
