Im brazilian, in the last 20 years in my city people have nearly fully embraced curly, natural hair. I remember when I was a kid my mom would straighten her hair once in a while, smoke would come out of her head because of the chemicals. Nowadays I see afros everywhere, I see buzz cuts, fades, braids locks everything. The variety is beautiful

I used to have a partner, and several times both he and his mom told me that I looked better with straight hair. In fact, sometimes he would only compliment me when I straightened it and dressed a certain way. During my first year of university, I broke up with him because I just didn't like him anymore; we had nothing in common, and honestly, the relationship was exhausting. I didn't want to be with anyone or go out. One day in class, I couldn't sit where I usually did because someone had taken my spot. So, I sat in the only open seat left, which was next to a guy. We started talking, and as time went on, I really started to like him. I also began straightening my curls because it had stuck in my head that I only looked prettier with straight hair. One day, after we had been flirting for a while, he asked me why I straightened my hair. I told him, "Because it’s the only way I look prettier and put-together," and he replied, "But your curly hair is beautiful, I've seen it around the university." A few days later, he gave me a drawing he did of me with my curly hair. Now, 9 years later, we are engaged and one year away from getting married! Since then, I never straighten my hair (except for events, since curly hair definitely poofs up when you sweat at parties xD) because thanks to that comment, I learned to love myself exactly as I am with my curls.
