: Matt, thank you for addressing the proverbial elephant in the room regarding disappearing functionality after purchase. This is a plague that needs to be stopped. If people buy devices with a specific set of functionalities then people should be able to keep on using all these functions as long as they please (they paid for it). This is the same problem that we have with computer games (hence the reason why "Stop Killing Games" has gotten so much attention and traction recently) and the "Right To Repair" movement. This arrogant behavior of manufacturers needs to stop and companies need to realize that this behavior will not end well for them if they continue ripping off consumers like that.
The audio quality review at the end was 100% my favorite part of this 😂
Great point about the electronics going obsolete when equipment from the 1970s will still be functioning (more or less) in 40 years.
It's rare you see Android being embedded in a device like this the correct way. This looks very decent. Is that really just a CD drive in it, or actually a DVD/BR drive in disguise? Maybe it can read other formats, like DVD-Audio or even a SACD as well.
Surprising there is no YouTube Music app. Really great to see Jellyfin. Stream music from your home server.

The only thing you can hope is that this device develops a loyal fanbase. So, when support disappears. There will be a vibrant community that creates firmware to keep it functioning. Proper consumer electronics are dead. Instead everything is some form of computer. With the positives of that. But also the negatives.

Mat, the SSD you show at 3:00 appears to be a SanDisk Extreme. These are known to fail and there are/were lawsuits about it. I know you're not using it for anything critical, but I thought you might want to look into it. Cheers!

You nailed it. Lots of people rent their music (streaming services); this is the equivalent of renting your music player (replacing it on the same pace you would replace a cell phone).

I've been listening to Radio Paradise for over 20 years. Still one of the best stations. They also had better quality streams in different formats while most other streaming stations were stuck to MP3 streams back in the early 2000s. I for some reason in the future that streaming device gets unsupported in the future, you still get the ability to develop an app and sideload it onto it to give it extra life.
I'll stick to my vinyl and CDs, plus a few tapes! They'll never disappear, unless someone steals or "borrows" them. They won't suddenly stop playing music. If we are all still here in 20 years time, I'd love an update on how well this is still working.
Thanks for voicing your concerns regarding obsolescence. It was my first thought when you got it out of the box. This kind of gadget would suit me perfectly as I only have CDs and digital files, but I just don't trust companies to keep stuff working.
Your discussion at the end there is one of the primary reasons I'm trying to get off cloud. I know it's not for everyone, but the possibility is there...
Eversolo are really good in supporting updates for their products. I have the DMP-A6 and in the past few years they keep on improving the software and features as well as take on board user feedback. IMHO the DMP-A6 is a better buy than the Play, but obviously without the inbuilt amplifier.
