We used isopropyl alcohol on a tissue to polish the tips of fibres in a data centre. For the record, I've installed thousands of fibre connections over many years

I had a broadcast TV production class in the 90s with TV cameras and fiber optic cables running across the floor to the cameras. The teacher begged us to not step on the cables because they each had like a hundred fibers (if I remember right) and if one snapped he'd have to check them one by one to find the damaged one.

I remember when i got a half-rack in a datacenter and when I went there to hook up my servers and networking equipment the fiber cable they had for me was uncapped and sitting under the raised floor where all the other power cables and fiber cables were. Shocker, but I had weird internet issues, with it even going out briefly on ocassion. Finally got a cleaner and used it on the cable, and it was better after that.
