The green is indeed the copper flashing away! Carbon rods will be orange _(like inside old "Heavy Duty" alkaline batteries; AA, D size, and many others)._ Those same batteries should have -tin- *zinc* casings and produce a pale blue. _[thank you Yehia!]_ Aluminum will produce bright white. As will Magnesium or Titanium. Lithium, though, will give a beautiful pinkish-red! That'd be the hardest one to pull off. Ideally you'd want to old laptop 18650s that are internally shorted _(crystals [dendrites] grow inside between anode and cathode),_ as there won't be any charge and can be opened relatively safely. I used a plumbering pipe cutter to cut through the casing. Problem is, the Li is in the black powder so I'm not sure the best way to utilize it. Could short the entire role, but there's fine copper foil in it as well and that might add green. This info is for educational purposes only. Do not open lithium batteries. And while you're outside and NOT opening them, wear gloves and quality breathing apparatus. *_Especially_* if NOT subjecting it to arcs! ☝️🤓 _edit: typo_ _edit 2: glaring error; ZINC not tin_ 😅

The greenish tint is caused by UV-A, B, C light produced by the voltaic arc. ;)

Grab some carbon electrodes from the welding shop (can also be found in some batteries) and you have created a carbon arc lamp! It was one of the first wide spread forms oh electric lighting and can get unbelievably bright. Would also be interesting to see if you can get different colored light with either the adding of different metalic salts (for example, lithium ions make a pink/red flame) or changing the contact material. Aluminum and magnesium burn extremely bright white so would definitely give some cool results. When messing with this it's really a good idea to protect your eyes! Welding masks exist for a reason and the light from an arc can do some serious damage.

Yes the green Hue comes from the Copper when its heated to the melting Temperature(partially vaporized) ! I am a Machine engineer and a Welder
