Also, Alan Turing was profoundly inspired by Kurt Gödel. Turing learned about Gödel's work while studying at Cambridge under topologist Max Newman. Gödel had proved that math was incomplete, but the third part of Hilbert's question, which is decidability, was still technically open. Using a diagonal argument heavily reminiscent of Gödel's self-referential proof, Turing proved that such a universal program is mathematically impossible.
