Keep in mind one thing, they’ve been saying from early on that the steam machine was gonna be priced like a PC, not a console. Not sure why people are surprised, especially with the massive inflation.

Valve never meant to compete with consoles but to replace mini PCs. The timing also may look bad but waiting for the RAM shortage to end would've just meant launching with outdated hardware and losing years of optimization and market presence
