Retired machine tool engineer here! In my working life I have fitted more drive belts to machines than most people would see in 10 lifetimes. Oil is the worst enemy of belts, be they made of rubber or polymers. Who ever made the decision to run a belt in oil, did so with the knowledge that they would fail.
