Flares work fine during rhe day. I fired one at a barge when Iwas going down in a boat fishing in alaska. Landed right on the deck of a dynamite barge. Good times. They came and saved our ass. I was about to go into the water in my survival suit.
While flare guns aren’t very visable during day, they are very bright on thermal imaging which helps coast guards pinpoint your location

You have to use flares whenever the aircraft or ship is in your sight.
You better have a true stress call because they'll charge you if it's not for all the fuel and cost for the helicopter or boat to come out and help you And when they get there don't ask for your lunch
