So much effort and money put into it, and at no point did anyone go "Hey guys, should we maybe ask Valve if this is cool?" actually insane

Valve might have said yes if asked first, but now they can never agree to it. Because that would set the precedent of other companies making "official" merch first and asking for permission from them later.
I swear, everyone who was developing it probably just assumed that *someone else* made sure that it was legal.

The issue with trademarks is that companies have to protect them even in cases in which they don't want nor care too, because if they dont protect their IP they create precident and lose the legal right to protect it when they want to.
They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn't stop to think if they should
I was so blown away when I saw that promo ad. "How cool is Steam for partnering with bdrand to use this IP and make a killer launch video for this product?" Now I realize what actually happened 🙃

It's ironic that the company called "debrand", as in removing the brand from a product, would make a product to put someone else's brand on a product.
It's very clear they're trying to not slam dbrand for how dumb they were because their logo is *right there on the screen*. "Valve is a weird company" no, dbrand is a weird company

For the Companion Cube case. The big question to ask is, is this the FIRST TIME D-Brand stole the IP, made a product, then asked forgiveness after. It sounds like no. Therefore, Valve NEEDED to tell them NO! Absolutely not! In order to correct the behavior. 1 Time is a mistake. More than once is a pattern of behavior, and in terms of stealing IP, that needs to be corrected.

The funniest part is they only remembered to ask for permission after valve sent them a cease and desist notice like bro of course they said no
I wonder if Valve would have given a license deal where they make say, 10% off the sale if D brand had done what they should have done and asked for permission before They even started development of this. But I guess we'll never know now and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if Valve does this product with literally anyone else because they should.
I'm kind of surprised they DIDN'T license this beforehand. Honestly, I thought they HAD licensed it and that it was all on the up and up.
