For people who listen to music at low levels, amplifiers used to have a button called "loudness". Unfortunately this is a functionality that is less common to find nowadays. Glad that your subwoofer allowed you to compensate the way you wanted.
Problem is that human hearing is nonlinear, in lower wolumes we tend not to hear bass. Loudness button is usefull for that, I dont know why audiophiles hate it.
You have to remind yourself that the kind of person that's telling you you need a preamp for this and a box for this and a wire for that is the kind of person who's got their power cables on stands to keep them off the floor because they think it affects the sound.
