The German Type 212CD by TKMS has now been selected by three countries as their future submarine: Germany, Norway, and Canada. With as many as 24 of these next-generation subs ordered at the time of making this video, with potentially more orders coming, it’s a good time for our channel to take a closer look at all of its known details, in addition to some developmental background. I like that you cites your sources. In this age of AI, quality content is becoming rare. Keep doing your great work !
That Thing looks sexy af
Watching from Canada! Really enjoy your Channel! Keep up the good work!
On paper it's looking very impressive indeed. Let's hope they can deliver roughly on schedule. IDAS and SeaSpider, if they end up working as described, will be game changers for submarines. According to Saab's CEO in recent interview, it sounds like their A26, at least the ones ordered by Poland, will be prepared to integrate something similar in the future. Maybe even the same systems.
How does the 212cd compare to the saab a26 and the barracuda from naval group? Would be interested in a video about that
I think you missed that the sub will be equipped with a new Type of lithium-ion batteries, which should also increase the range of the sub accordingly. The optical periscope will be replaced by optronic masts.
Thank you from Germany for this deep dive into our newest uboat. The Canadian order really boosted the program. Should Greece join? I'd be delighted, but maybe having interoperable subs in the Mediterranean with France might be a bigger priority. Commandos still exit through the torpedo tube? The 212A batch 2 had an enlarged sail (compared to batch 1) with an exit chamber in the rear for exactly that purpose.
Good choice Canada😁 Having same submarines means a canadian sub can sail to a port in Norway or Germany for repairs. Might not have been possible with the korean sub
Correction: 3:32 says “July 2025” for Canada’s decision; but this is a typo and should be July 2026. Thanks for those who pointed it out (it helps us even more if a time code is mentioned so we can locate and respond to these corrections) 😄
From Canada, very happy we decided to go with TKMS - Looks great
Both a great video regarding the technical specifications of the submarine, but also AMAZING work by you guys there, quoting and citing the sources directly in the video, and even telling us that if you looked for some specific data, you only got an AI halucination back. This shows you are truly doing some integer work there!
This should become a European Platform. With 24 units already on order, and Greece looking favourably at the design, the economies of scale make a lot of sense. Building Submarines is a highly technical, expensive business. Like the British Type 26 Frigate : Britain ordered 8, Canada 15, Australia 6, Norway 5 - with 30 + platforms, it means better ships, stronger supply and servicing logistics and cross training opportunities.
the source for the more then 40 Days of underwater endurance comes from the carney speach
Funny. Normally only hostile ships and subs have the pleasure to hear launching/incoming torps. Now the helos can participate. Must be a weird experience, to sit on the sonar buoy console and think "sh*t! Why is the sub launching a torpedo???" 😁😅
They sold so much that the sought Navantia so they could share their workload with the Spanish Shipyard, which is good news for all. Specially for Navantia which unfortunately hasn't been able to export any S80 submarines so far.
The IDAS does not come firstly with the U212cd, but it is already in Integration into the German 212A.
캐나다의 현명한 결정에 박수를 보냅니다. 대한민국이 절대로 하면 안되는 바보같은 거래를 할뻔 했는데 다행히 독일 잠수함이 채택되었네요.
In my opinion, this was certainly the right decision for Canada, a lot of it had to do with the fact that Canada needs a defensive submarine not an offensive submarine. This is also a smaller boat which requires a smaller crew, which is important given the fact that it's difficult to get submariners these days. As far as Greece goes, it makes some sense given that this boat and will be very useful in the shallow Waters around the greece coastline. Just a nit, The graphic that outlines Canada's purchase of up to 12 was made in July 2026 not July 2025
It is strange that Canada chose such a small submarine with such limited range... 🤔🤔🤔
Looking forward to seeing the first boat live in the port.
