South Yorkshire Police have released footage of a lorry swerving across the M18 motorway after the driver fell asleep. Officers were in an unmarked HGV when they saw the vehicle veering onto the hard shoulder numerous times, on one occasion almost hitting a stationary van. After bringing it to a stop, police found several empty energy drinks cans in the cab, which the driver had been using to try to stay awake. The force said he was dealt with for the offences. We are overworked and underpaid, feel for the guy but he should pull off and get his head down before it gets that bad
Most HGV drivers are doing 50+ hrs weeks, some even up to 60hrs. The amount of pressure on them by haulage bosses to keep working is insane. Yet anything goes wrong everyone points at the driver.
Most driving jobs have fatigue issues, especially in this weather. We need a maximum working temperature but also hold the companies to account.
A lorry driver once saved my life on the way from London to Cornwall. I was overdoing it at work and dozed off at the wheel. Over 20 years ago but would still like to thank him!
Transport manager's and big bosses to blame for this he could of been waiting hours at a distribution centre for hours while the warehouse probably understaffed to cope yet chief executive sits back getting huge bonuses
I worked as an HGV driver, often doing 69-hour weeks with just 9-hour rest periods, spending most of my life behind the wheel. The pay wasn’t great, and the conditions could be incredibly tough. Then people wonder why tragedies like this happen. My thoughts are with the poor man behind that wheel. God bless him.

When he was pulled over, he had two large, empty, cans of energy drink in his cab. He knew he was knackered and he kept on going anyway. The driver is ultimately responsible for his actions, and he was lucky he didn't kill anyone.

I’d try get his attention and just recommend to pull over let him know how bad it’s getting I’m sure he’s just over worked and doesn’t realise how tired he really is I hope this didn’t end in a bad way
We're just waiting to see if he kills someone before we pull him over because we want to be absolutely sure that he's dangerous

So blame the lorry driver ? Or blame the government? This guy may have been working 15 hours per day for 3 days on the trot while only having 9 hours rest on 2 of the days. When you drive on holiday 300 miles, and you get to your destination are you tired? Well he still has to drive home but before he does that the truck needs unloading, and sometimes that’s by hand. Just imagine starting at 12 noon and finishing at 3am then your back in at 12 noon for another 15 hours, taking in consideration that you live 30mins away, so thats only 8 hours rest. The political would be… it’s the driver that has to make sure he is properly rested. But the rules are set up for you not to be properly rested and as soon as it goes wrong boom driver fault.

Hgv driving is a very difficult job that very much relies on a good nights sleep.
That's why they tell you to get out of your vehicle if you need to use the hard shoulder.
And this ladies and gents is why you get out of your vehicle if you breakdown on the hard-shoulder!
