Ah yes, the high pitch buzzing that YOUR PARENTS WOULDN'T BELIEVE YOU because THE FREQUENCY WAS TOO HIGH to still be in their HEARING RANGE AT THEIR AGE!

SO WAIT. That means that when people in tv and movies would take unplugged tvs and smash them and they'd electricute something, they were RIGHT?!

I did not realize how fucking terrifying CRTs are. Thank you for this

As a kid I would run my sox across the rug, then shuffle to the TV and zap and get zapped by the TV for fun

they're also like, really cute. like mettaton in deltarune was so real for that edit: hey so I DID mean Deltarune. I'm talking about that person you give Tenna to. :/

New Superhero Origin: An average tv repairman accidentally turned on 10 CRT Tvs simultaneously. The gamma radiation infused his cells with the powers of Soccer, Golf, John Wayne, A Documentary about Cheese, The Red Hot Chili Peppers live in concert coming July 28 to the Roxxon Pavilion, Roronoa Zoro, and Pepsi. He’ll be so excited if he ever wakes from the coma.

Does anybody remember the sound crts made any time they were on?

I oddly enough remember playing Skyrim on a fuggin CRT, fun fact Skyrim runs pretty well on a crt

I brought out my old tv when my new one would no longer play any sound. I hooked it up to an old vcr so I could change channels with the remote. Then my house was struck by lightning. The blast went through my whole electrical system, blowing out computors and appliances as it went. It killed the vcr. The television worked just fine, although the color seemed to be off. I looked closer, and I could see the lines forking across the picture tube where the charge had passed through it. Still sounded great though. It was a Panasonic.

Honestly all those subsequent posts just recontextualized the meme as Problem with new tech: Ugh, this new stuff never works Problem with old tech: Wow, look at all the crazy things old stuff does when it fails!

It also doesn't begin to cover how shitty modern TVs are

Had an old tv that had a little blue flame in the screen when you turned it off.

Also a friendly reminder that fully discharged capacitors can self-charge a bit by bit over time. It's called dielectric absorption. Short your capacitors after you discharge them.

ITS ✨TV✨ TIME

.... that explains the "fuzzy" feeling of my grandparents big ole tv they've tried to kill off for i think 30 years at this point. Its one of those old wooden box tvs that won't die no matter what you do. It can and will out live me, and frankly with this new knowledge i know what i'm claiming when they die.

The reason why snes games look wired on modern tvs is that the games are optimized for the CRTs. The devs use the scanlines to hide things

There's a reason why Vox's face started melting when a crt monitor fell on his head when he died.

The tube itself is actually the dangerous capacitor, part of the CRT's operation is to charge the tube up to kiloVolts. Bleed resistors were fairly common in later units and high end units, but you can't trust them due to their age so it's important to always discharge the CRT if you're working on it.

you should generally not be touching ANYTHING that can electrocute you with your left hand specifically. The danger isnt that current will run from one hand to the other through your heart, its that itll flow from your left hand to the ground. Electricians often keep their left hand in their pocket at all times just to be safe

I remember seeing a sci-fi show in the early 90s (young kid then, remember almost nothing) where some badguy from the future disassembles a CRT to get at the Electron Gun component, takes it and creates a handheld energy weapon with it. I have no other memory except that tiny bit.
