I remember this, BMW then went on a 6 month hunt for the problem spending a couple million dollars only to find out the driver hadn't flipped the switch to turn the feature on.

You should watch the entire video. Emergency brake assist was disabled in this test, so the driver had to brake manually. In the prior test, the same car had the system enabled and stopped without hitting anything.

We have this thing in germany called "vorführeffekt". It works every single time with no problem at all, until you want to show it to someone else. Its not just cars. Its everything you can imagine. The emergency braking system is an assist system, not a full independent braking system Edit: I know that full independent braking systems exist, but remember, this is a car from before 2010 and also in the fog.

Apparently at the testing site a large amount of steel interfered with radar so mercedes wanted to have the driver manually brake but the wood plank marker to indicate braking point was missed due to the sophisticated suspension.
