I remember this, BMW then went on a 6 month hunt for the problem spending a couple million dollars only to find out the driver hadn't flipped the switch to turn the feature on.

You should watch the entire video. Emergency brake assist was disabled in this test, so the driver had to brake manually. In the prior test, the same car had the system enabled and stopped without hitting anything.

We have this thing in germany called "vorfΓΌhreffekt". It works every single time with no problem at all, until you want to show it to someone else. Its not just cars. Its everything you can imagine. You make a hundreds of perfect omlettes.. serve it to others once and you burn the whole thing. Want to show your friends a trick you mastered? The first time you fuck up in years.

The emergency braking system is an assist system, not a full independent braking system Edit: I know that full independent braking systems exist, but remember, this is a car from before 2010 and also in the fog.

I mean, even in newer cars those systems don't work perfectly. So having the ability 20 years ago, was a big deal at the time π

They launched it with a line and tried to force it to instantly stop. That explains why auto reverse breaking is fucking bonkers now. Got minor womanβs whiplash

I don't think I'd trust any car to stop for me with the technology we had 21 years ago...

Apparently at the testing site a large amount of steel interfered with radar so mercedes wanted to have the driver manually brake but the wood plank marker to indicate braking point was missed due to the sophisticated suspension.

Be my guest making fun of it and now repeat the same test in a Jag or Land Rover please. That would make us Germans really laugh ^^
