These two tiny, half-moon shaped pieces of metal are the only things holding back hundreds of pounds of spring pressure, keeping the valve firmly attached to the retainer. If the spring compressor tool slips while your fingers are in there, you are in for a world of hurt. Worse yet, if you drop one of those tiny keepers, it can bounce right down an oil passage into the bottom of the engine block!

Its super easy. Put the keepers in and place a large socket on top and smack it with a dead blow until they catch.

The easy solution to this is to just the springs.
I did that 40 years ago for 12 valves on an inline 6cyl Ford engine. The spring is nothing. What’s important is to not let the valve drop into the cylinder.
