To answer the question, motherboard video output uses the CPU's integrated graphics (bypassing the video card) which is what leads to lower gaming performance and potentially insufficient display resolution/refresh rate options. It's not reducing the performance of your video card, it's switching to an entirely different graphics system, or no system on many platforms.

For the people who want the car analogy basically the motherboard is the car the CPU is the engine and a GPU is like a turbo. The engine will run without the turbo, but it becomes much more better with the turbo
