You had a fourth option. Drive at an appropriate speed that allows you to stop in unforseen situations. The car in front of you did not slam his breaks. He just slowed down.

Your bad awareness and lack of safe driving is what got you into that. Firstly your going too fast, if you were going the correct speed, you would have been able to stop in time as long as you were also keeping a safe distance. Secondly, you should have slowed down as soon as the car in front put on the breaks on. Which clearly you didnt which is how you ended up in this situation. In general, you will always be able to stop in time in a situation like this if your following the rules and keeping your eyes in front of you.
