I like that the solenoids hitting the switches are powered by mechanical relays, which themselves are basically solenoids that hit switches in a much more compact package

The most cursed data transmission that's actually in use has to be, not joking, mud pulsing. When drilling for oil, the bit is loaded up with sensors to collect data about the rock. Getting the data to the surface is not easy, because the drill is a bunch of daisy chained steel tubes vibrating like crazy under huge stresses. You can't just run an Ethernet cable down there. But... there is drilling mud being pumped through the center of the drill bit. So what they do is use a mechanical sphincter to repeatedly constrict the flow of drilling mud, which creates pressure pulses that can be read at the surface. It's incredibly slow, but the information is valuable enough that it's worth waiting for.
