Aftermath & Additional Info: The trucker was hauling over 40,000 lbs of liquid bulk hazmat cargo in an unbaffled smoothbore tanker. Under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Title 49 CFR regulations, drivers transporting bulk hazardous materials are bound by strict protocols regarding emergency stops to prevent catastrophic spills, fires, or explosions. Heavy liquid chemicals (like sulfuric acid, ethanol, or solvents) cannot fill a tanker completely without exceeding federal weight limits (80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight), which creates significant "slosh space" (outage). If the trucker had locked up his brakes at speed, the violent forward liquid surge could have ruptured the tank shell, sheared the kingpin, or rolled the entire rig—likely killing both drivers. Locking up the brakes wasn't just dangerous; it was a physical impossibility to do safely. Ultimately, the car spun off into the ditch and according to the trucker the driver seemed unharmed. The trucker then pulled over further down the road to check on him, but by the time he walked back, the road rager had already left. The only damage to the rig was a cracked front bumper and a broken radar/driving assistant sensor (~$3,500 in repairs). The fleeing driver couldn't be identified, but the trucker’s company’s insurance covered the repairs and used the dashcam evidence to waive the driver’s fault and keep their safety rating clean. ****
