WiFi routers are omni-directional systems. By putting a reflector behind it, you are blocking access in the direction of the reflector. It is now a quasi-directional antenna.

Anyone who has used an analog TV with antennas (rabbit ears type) 100% knows this. We used to wrap the tip of the TV antennas with aluminum foil and fan it out for better TV reception. It always works.

that’s aluminium foil not tin foil, Tin blocks radio waves ( hence where the name tin foil hat came from) whereas aluminium does the opposite…. sure does make you wonder why they stopped making tin foil though…
