No worries. We will get the wildlife and cut content in Halo: Anniversary Evolved
If I don’t see “press y to duel wield” in the next one….
"The Halo, it's unfinished."
I agree about the uncanny cutscenes. Some of the dialogue feels weird, sometimes it's over acted, sometimes under acted, too many pauses. The flow of dialogue feels more like voice lines just being played more than people talking to each other
Sgt Johnson sounds too much like the cheetah from the Cheetos commercials.
Biggest flaw for me is the Reach Elite melee animations
My biggest problem with the game so far is that cadence of every single cutscene and character feels wrong. Like we’re having a casual conversation in a war zone…
In a remake, nothing should be a downgrade from the original.
Whenever I see Keyes now all I can think of is "Mr. Covenant, tear down this energy shield."
With the opening cutscene, we also miss the hanger bay section. Which is essential for helping show that the UNSC is an organised fighting force - showing the scorpion that you will later drive - and the hanger where you will later dash across to the longsword :(
There's a lot about this game that I actually really loved... and a lot that i didn't... What rating would you give Campaign Evolved? Also, before anyone says “just don’t sprint”, my criticisms with it are partially personal but also pertain to the new player experience. There are going to be so many new people playing Halo 1 for the first time with this game who will just automatically sprint because it’s a base mechanic, but because most of the environments and encounters aren’t scaled up to accommodate for it, they’re gonna end up having a really jarring experience where it feels like the levels and gameplay don’t align properly - a problem that didn’t exist in Combat Evolved
We are ganna have to wait for mods to make the necessary changes 😢
The thing I hated the most about Campaign Evolved was the handholding and guidance. The waypoints are absolutely atrocious, and remove all sense of wonder or a need to explore for yourself. It's an absolute JOKE when Keyes warns you about stealth Elites, then they all get marked with waypoints. Marking the INVISIBLE enemies with WAYPOINTS. Or Foehammer telling you were all the marine squads are on Halo from the start before marking them all with waypoints, and Cortana additionally telling you to get closer when you approach each area. Now you can turn those off, and that's the first thing I did, but a lot of voiced dialogue still explains the obvious. Like Cortana and Guilty Spark both telling you to follow the glowing arrows on the floor, or Cortana telling you how to fight Hunters or stealth Elites. It's literally the "Focus, M" meme of writing where the designers seem absolutely TERRIFIED of a player being lost or confused for even a second, so they hold your hand every step of the way. Which makes it more bizzare when Operation Meterorite doesn't do that. It just feels like my intelligence as a player is being insulted when they don't even trust me to traverse a linear area.
The forerunner structures are supposed to give off that Egyptian pyramid feeling of a civilization far ahead of its time, yet still obviously ancient.
343GS is weird, when the Jenkins cutscene finishes all of the bodies in the room are just gone when it transitions to gameplay. They're there when Chief walks in, but then when gameplay starts the layout of the blood pools and weapons are the same as OG Halo CE.
Who would have thought that outsourcing work and not building a dedicated team would leave things unsynched, unfinished, or just bland. Having a work place culture beyond something transactional where employees WANT to build the best Halo game is not possible if the game dev team is just multiple separate entities held together by a contract. (Obviously, this doesn't include Blur studios, they need to come back asap)
I absolutely hate almost everything they did with Cortana. Half of her lines sound like Jen was directed to sound like the TikTok ai voice. The commanding tone she had so often in the original is nowhere to be found. She now has an incredibly bubbly personality, as though everything that happens in the story is cute or funny to her, or like she just doesn’t care.
Article in PC gamer made a point about the art style I've gotta agree with. As gorgeous as the visuals are, look at Marathon. Those visuals aren't realistic at all, but they're very readable, and very distinctive. Where Campaign Evolved falls short I think is where making it look "realistic" makes it look different.
If you want to play a good remake, I wholeheartedly recommend the Halo CE Ruby Rebalanced mod. New encounters, gameplay balancing, restored wildlife, new enemy variants, new weapons, improved environmental storytelling, new vehicles, improvements and in some cases fixes to the repetitiveness of the latter half of the game, and many more small details that were enhanced while maintaining the essence and respect for the original game. I also recommend keeping an eye on their Halo 2 Rebalanced mod, which is on par with a AAA remake (seriously, it's absurd).
3:39 "near perfect" the volumetric smoke glitching out like crazy and flashing all over the screen LMAOOO
