Automatic Updates for security patches and hotfixes is fine. Automatic Updates for random apps, features or installing new products or enabling crap that I intentionally disabled is not fine.

It's that Microsoft has a secondary system (WMIS) for the express purpose of *automatically installing* Windows Store apps published by the manufacturer via metadata fetched using the newly connected Hardware IDs. These two things are wholly and entirely separate and one should not be connected to the other even in spirit.
I literally ran an update on Linux Mint while watching this video. It was over in 10 seconds and disrupted absolutely nothing about anything I was doing. My work laptop in stark contrast, demands updates when it wants them, and takes 3 business years to install them.
Simple way to solve the problem: If a vendor intentionally installs "malware" or 3rd party programs, during driver install/update, without the users consent then **ALL** their "Microsoft signing certificates" get revoked and they have to go through the application process to apply for a new one.
How is McAfee even still going? Who is still using that?
Hear me out: this is a significant malware vector. I should get a system enforced prompt: "do you allow this usb mouse to launch this executable". I DO NOT want a random chinese usb device to be allowed to inject a payload without my explicit consent. I MIGHT. MIGHT trust Samsung or Logitech with this feature. I do NOT trust an offbrand USB mouse from the dollar store with this ability.

The problem is that Microsoft policies allow this, which is one reason LG did it. Microsoft only said no because of big public backlash. Logitech mice and keyboards also do this BTW. Not with sponsored content just yet, at least that I know of, but the mouse and keyboard automatically install "Logitech Download Assistant" which gives you popups for Logitech+
windows SHOULD be able to fix a corrupted dx11 install though so i dont get a stupid needless warning when starting games
Windows XP used to have the feature of "Download updates, but let me decide when to Install them". That's the setting I miss.

I think partially the reason why people just delay updates is the fact its slow and distruptive. As Luke said, windows update is slow, might block your computer for an extended period of time and it potentially reinstalls or re-enables stuff you dont want. I dont mind updating on Cachy as its super fast and non distruptive, even if it says a restart is needed, it will not harass me about it. Also even after a kernel update the computer starts up in seconds which really makes it feel seamless. I hate sitting in front of my work laptop and wait for like 5 minutes for it to do its thing.. Its not the end of the world, its just 5 minutes, but enough to be annoying for me. But to pretty much stands for the andorid updates. It takes like 10 minutes to install, then your phone restarts for 5 minutes, usually a bunch of your icons and widgets just get messed up... I caught myself also just delaying updating my phone out of sheer annoyance. So I think the way to fix this issue is to force automatic updates, BUT make them as non distruptive as possible. Also sufficient testing... Windows breaking SSDs and millions of PC is completely unaccaptable.
