Smartphone Sales Crash to 13-Year Low as Global Demand Slumps The global smartphone industry has recorded its weakest second quarter in 13 years, marking a major slowdown for one of the world's largest consumer electronics markets. According to new estimates from Counterpoint Research, worldwide smartphone shipments fell 11% year-on-year in the April-June quarter, dropping to their lowest Q2 level since 2013. Analysts say the biggest reason behind the slump is the ongoing global memory chip shortage. The rapid expansion of AI data centres has sharply increased demand for DRAM and NAND memory chips, pushing up component costs for smartphone manufacturers. Most brands have passed these higher costs on to consumers through price increases, reducing demand for new devices. The slowdown has affected nearly every major smartphone maker. While premium brands such as Apple and Samsung have managed to hold on to market share, many Android manufacturers have faced weaker sales as buyers postpone upgrades or opt for lower-priced models. Industry experts say consumers are now keeping their smartphones for longer instead of replacing them every two or three years. The outlook for the rest of 2026 also remains challenging. IDC now expects global smartphone shipments to fall by nearly 14% this year, making it the steepest annual decline on record unless memory supplies improve and component prices stabilise.
