"Chipsets from Realtek generally didn't work. Chipsets from Broadcom generally didn't work" This is true under normal circumstances
He's now the Lego Island guy, the Windows 95 guy, AND the Wii U guy. Edit: I did NOT expect this comment to blow up like this. 1.6K likes is unheard of for me. I guess he's just that guy.
This. This is actual system programming. Considering performance, taking into account the hardware capabilities. This is ART!.
5:06 “GitHub user lwfinger maintains a back port of the driver”. Maintained, Larry Finger who did loads of work over the past couple of decades on WiFi drivers for Linux, including helping me clean up those awful vendor drivers from Realtek, passed away in 2024. He was 84.
The Wii U riivolution starts...
code optimization content is one of my favorite niches
20:42 For those who were curious, the error was in the last line. It should’ve been “menu_game_ctx.last_power_time = current_minute” instead of the other way around. Otherwise, last_power_time is never updated and thus the check in the if statement will always be true, causing the function to pull updates every frame.
Denuvo might as well call themselves KMSDRM because thats how we all feel when a game uses it
I was waiting for this to drop just because your storytelling and what you are willing to do about that stuff is insane, never even owned a Wii U or cared for it lol
at this point we might have to consider you the mario island guy
I thought it was over, I thought no more Wii U gamepad cloning after this video, I was wrong.
6:57 HARD OFF IS MENTIONED AGAIN ON THE CHANNEL LETS GO
As someone who has done a lot of work with embedded linux, I can tell you that many, many vendor-written drivers never make it into the kernel. If they submitted their code to lkml they would get shredded. SoCs often ship with a fork of some older linux kernel and a bunch of drivers for the built-in peripherals that the vendor wrote, and they are generally awful. If you then check a newer kernel version you may find a driver that's half the size and with more features.
Mate I thank you, because your whole H.264 SPS thingy probably just solved at least a year worth of attempting to figure out a delay I'm having when decoding H.264
20:42 For anyone wondering, he was reassigning the local `current_minute` rather than the context field, ie. L116 `current_minute = menu_game_ctx.last_power_time` should be `menu_game_ctx.last_power_time = current_minute`
32:15 Dude, you not apologize viewers after pulling good content. It takes what it takes.
The fact that you spent so long trying to get this working on the Pi 0 is - ironically - a very Nintendo way of thinking: taking old, cheap hardware and giving it a new life with some ingenuity and optimisation was Gunpei Yokoi's entire mantra.
So essentially a way to replace gamepads that are either broken or not included when buying a wii u, neat.
Here we go, another Wii U video and im all for it
after watching this, i have a newfound and deep respect for developers and Matt himself for all the crazy shit they go through to make pixels on shitty computer go brr, and though i've become even more scared of having to become a developer, i'm also not going to have to deal as much with hardware. still, thank you for making this amazing project Matt!!!!!!
