I believe you've missed the ecological impacts of the sludge water waste from data centres, the implicaitons of infrasound data centres emit, and general implications on public water supplies. Seems odd when some of my favourite videos from you focused on the emptying of the Murray-Darling

Thing about arguing for AI datacenters by pointing out the success of standard datacenters is implicitly assuming they are the same, when they arent. A standard datacenter is in a lot of cases storage focused - storing large sums of data for future and/or current use. The data storage itself is not an intrinsically resource intense one. AI datacenters are built for computing. Computing for AI requires fast floating point calculations, quantizing parameters and uncompressing them, and keeping the data in really fast storage. Moderns graphics cards - while built for 3d - do these tasks very effectively but also draw a lot of power in the process and require effective cooling as a result. AI datacenters resemble crypto mining more than data hoarding. The only thing these 2 share in common is the name, which by that logic would make inflation (the economic kind) and inflation (the sonic kind) one and the same. This isnt to say that there is no use for them, but it means they shouldn't be meassured by the same stick
Regular data centres don't consume anywhere near as much power or water as AI data centres

If AI data centres are this necessary on this scale, why does the entirety of China only have about 500-odd data centres, while the US is projected to build at least 20x that amount? Are we just supposed to sit here, satisfied with our smugness that this has nothing to do with Palantir building a precrime panopticon, and that everyone opposing this is just a boomer?
You have to understand that there’s data centres (day-tah, not darter, say it Frenchie!) and there’s AI data centres. The AI ones have all the GPUs in them and are probably an economy wrecker (you can’t build them fast enough for them not to become obsolete). The ones that aren’t doing compute, but are stacked full of RAM, those are handy.
Datacenters don't belong in residential areas and do not create value for anyone. Draining resources is nothing but problematic and AI has absolutely ruined consumer friendly technology.
the reason i'm so against ai is more because of who is spearheading it. medical uses, architecture, fertiliser calculations are good uses, but they are not the reason why companies seem to be doing it, they are far more concerned with spyware and the monetisation of the very things that make us human like human interactions, curiosity, and creation. if we managed to make data centres without the debilitating effects on ecosystem and community as seen in America, i can see them making a good energy dump, my biggest concern is still who uses the data centres and what data is being stored, i will not abide mass surveillance, especially not by corporations like meta or openai.
If AI needs all them data centres, then surely we have nothing to worry about if it goes all Skynet on us. We can simply blow up the centres or maybe just cut the power to them.

I work at one. Many people dont know how they use water to actually cool the server racks. In the usa they place them in desert dry areas where yes you would need a shit ton of water (in a place that has little to begin with) however many in Melbourne (where im based) use either free cooling evap (basically air comes in to the building via dampers, then they use fans to push the air into the hall and then servers suck it as is and dump hot air back out into the exhaust of the building. Evap coolers are present and do use some water but they are turned off by default and are used during peak temperatures which isnt as offten) closed loop liquid cooling (same as free air but the way they get cold air is they use evaporation/radiators with fans to cool a liquid network which exchanges heat with the internal air loop. Finally we have actual liquid cooling (they are still not the main method but growing). Same as the closed loop liquid but this time the internal system is also liquid no longer just air. They put pipes into the racks and use pg25 (25 percent glycol, 75 percent water) and use a heat exchanger to use the external liquid loop to cool the internal. Notice unless you use evaporate cooler you wont use water only electeicty. Overall given melbournes temperature and climate we dont need much evaporation cooling thus water isnt used as much as people claim. This is based on how they operate in the usa but thats a byproduct of goverment irregulations not how we operate here
