What kinda Micky Mouse operation is this?
Dave, I'm a boat mechanic. Something you should know about boat engines is that almost all boat engines use sea water to cool the engines rather than a radiator or air fins. Some engines have the sea water pumped directly through the engine(hence where the lizard in the head came from) others have coolant that gets cooled through a sea water cooled heat exchanger in place of a radiator. But all the sea water that gets pumped through the system is then discharged through the engine's exhaust keeping the exhaust system from becoming a fire hazard. With this in mind, a weakness to these systems is they are vulnerable to sea water back flowing from the exhaust into the engine instead of out through the exhaust, which is what most likely happened here with this engine given that one of the cylinders was rusted and all the exhaust valves were siezed. The most common cause of that is excessive cranking without the engine starting: most sea water pumps are belt driven and if the engine doesn't fire, the exhaust gases aren't there to push the sea water out from the exhaust and the sea water fills the exhaust til it has no where else to go but into the engine, causing it to hydrolock. And if the water isn't removed in time, rust and corrosion seeps in causing the engine to seize. Hopefully that helps you understand how this engine might have failed.

Marine rated engines have more restrictions on leaking fluids, this is why they have more fasteners per inch. FYI
The blocked off "governor" you talking about is the emplacement where the injection pump is installed when the engine is configured to run on diesel fuel. Normally the plain shaft mounted in there is a camshaft just for the pump. The governor in front operate the fuel rack.

If he really means this came from Disneyland in California (and not Disney World which is a common mistake) I would have driven that engine around the Jungle Cruise as I was a skipper from 1987-1989. They ran on Natural gas back then. They were super reliable, and would be in operation from 9:00 am to 10pm or sometimes midnight 7 days a week with a one day monthly rotation out of service (for service) and we hardly ever had one that went down. I’m not sure how maintenance works today. I do know the maintenance guys back then kept them running well. I can only imagine the hours on those little engines.

Spot on, Dave! You’ve actually got a great eye, because that is exactly where the internal mechanical governor links up. If you trace that throttle cable right down to where it hooks onto the speed control lever on the front right side of the block, that shaft goes directly into the gear case housing. Inside, it connects the external linkage to the governor springs and flyweights right behind the injection pump to manage the fuel rack. It's an easy component to overlook if you don't know Kubota blocks, so nice catch recognizing it!
That is the drive for the diesel injection pump on the diesel version of that motor.

I like that you are letting the builder help with the next teardown so he can make notes and remember how things go for the builds. Since it is a uncommon engine that will be very helpful.
What an honor to have Disney call and ask for your professional services!! Back in the late 1960's to early 1970's, my dad was a sales rep for automotive machining equipment covering all of Florida. One of his clients was Walt Disney World, Orlando. He helped to spec out their automotive machine shop, set the entire contract up, priced everything, etc. I was in diapers when my dad worked with Disney so I only can relay what he told me, but he said their machine shop was 100% capable of being completely independent and doing everything Dave's can do in-house. I bring this up to let the world know that WDW has, or at least HAD, the capability to do all the machining needed to manufacture and maintain their entire fleet. They used to have real machinists and mechanics on staff and I must assume they still have at least a few. So, to have them call Dave's to do this work is, in my opinion, a great testament to the reputation of Dave's Auto Center. Congratulations Dave and crew!! I look forward to Part 2 of this cool mini-series!!
