Yuup. Ran my finger all the way around the sprocket once. I was trueing the rear wheel by adjusting the spokes with the wheel on the bike and was so proud of my results I gave the wheel a big spin and placed my finger on the rim to feel how straight it ran and somehow ended up with the end of my finger in the chain and sprocket. It was about 35° F outside and it HURT! Hurt REAL bad!

It cost my buddy all his fingers doing this while cleaning his chain, from the second knukle on his pinky straight across them all !!! Bikes ran in the family, grandad, dad, and son, so should have known better, but on that day 'fingers' was affectionatly born !!

A lot of people f-ed around and found out I thought it was extremely obvious and easily avoidable but I guess some people feel invincible because it hasn't happened before it won't now

Thats not even what its for, or what its called. Its a chain guide/slider. To keep your chain from derailing. None of it for protecting your fingers.

Not really the main idea, mainly helpful for sticks, or other material that might get stuck, is supposed to be the actual purpose

2 things spring to mind.... 1: that chain is stupidly loose. 2: I have never felt the need to grab a moving chain on my bike. Not least because, when it's moving like that, it's because I'm riding it and unlikely to do so from the floor next to the bike.
