They sent an email to customs to hold him as "person of Interest" then tried to claim it was a "random border patrol search".
The illegal part is that the data is on the phone and you delete it while the police have it. But I don't like that they do it.... if you delete it before you arrive, it's not the same thing. The argument of "they have CSAM" is because they can't prove it so they pick the worst possible thing they can think of to justify their accusations.
