Yall know that trimming their nails is not the same thing as a declaw…right? It’s the same as cutting your own nails when they get too long…

i used to let my kitty make biscuits on my bare legs with her sharp claws and i'd just sit through and bear it. i miss her

Anyone who legitimately thinks that trimming your cats nails is the equivalent to declawing is a moron.

trimming your cat's nails is normal. unfortunately some people trim them too short.

My cats also had their teeth removed. Kinda sad, but at least they seem to be feeling better now...

copying and pasting my reply because some people think a trim is "declawing": as cats get older, they stop scratching as often and usually need help. my poor baby boy (rip, 1/18/25) needed his claws trimmed when he got older but my mother always said she'd "get to it later". one of his claws had grown so long that it was hooking into his paw pad because he wasnt scratching anything anymore. you HAVE to pay attention.

Actually that’s wrong I saw the video on instagram from the og poster and it was about people asking why she had to remove her cats teeth which she said “my cat was in a lot of pain so we had no choice but to remove all her teeth, she’s happier now”

As long as your careful to not get the quick you can trim cat nails just fine. Even if your cat firmly believes they are being tortured

Comments are correct, when some cats get older they'll stop grooming themselves making it the owners duty to trim their nails and bathe them. Usually happens when they get really older or I believe after a traumatic injury/surgery they may stop

I just have a scratching post with sand paper on it. Cats trim thier own nails

Ppl think a trim is a declaw? You can see the claws are still on that cat!

Why would you trim your cats nails? They naturally do it by… making biscuits specifically on wood and other harder materials…

As a vet tech, i promise, you can trim their nails without declawing them 😅

Hi!! Trimming your cats claws is fine. Dont do it if your cat has outdoor access or needs extra grip on surfaces. (ie, my girls both have outdoor access.we live in the countryside, they are safe from roads. My oldest enjoys to climb, so she needs her claws at the fullest, and my youngest is missing a leg (it does NOT stop her) so she needs them to keep a good grip on surfaces. An indoor cat does NOT need fully sharp claws, its the same thing as cutting a dogs claws. Declawing is what you lot are on about (the full extraction of a claw) it is painful for the cat longterm and can cause other issues. This baby seems very happy and well loved.

I could probably start trimming my elder cat's nails because she's been using scratching posts less as she gets older, but my other cats have perfect claws and manage them by themselves with rope wraps on posts and boards. Pretty sure that's normal.

Can we stop saying it’s older cats that need their nails trimmed. Every owner should be trimming their cats nails at home or during vet visits no matter the age of cat. Cats scratch at things to help yes, but you still need to trim the nails if they are getting too long. If they get too long the nails can grow curving back into the paw and cause the nails to cut the paws open. Just do the normal thing and trim your cats nails. If you can’t doesn’t want you to, I do not care, wrap that baby in a blanket or towel and get that shit done.

I only clip my two cats nails when they quite literally become needle point talons and I just get the sharp part no need to go any lower just enough to make them blunt
