The World Wide Web (WWW) is one of the most influential inventions in modern history. Created in 1989 by British computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland, the Web was originally designed as a system for researchers to share and access information across different computers. The technologies introduced alongside it, including HTML (HyperText Markup Language), HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), and URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) became the foundation of the modern web and remain essential to billions of websites today. Before the Web became the global standard, it faced competition from other Internet information systems, most notably Gopher, a protocol developed at the University of Minnesota. During the early 1990s, Gopher was widely adopted by universities, governments, and research institutions. However, in February 1993, the University of Minnesota announced licensing fees for certain commercial uses of Gopher server software. The decision sparked concern across the Internet community, as developers feared that access to online information could become restricted by licensing and proprietary software. Just two months later, on 30 April 1993, CERN announced that the World Wide Web software and protocols would be released into the public domain, making them permanently available for anyone to use, modify, and build upon without paying royalties or obtaining permission. The decision encouraged developers, businesses, universities, and entrepreneurs around the world to adopt the Web, contributing to its rapid growth and eventually establishing it as the dominant platform for publishing and accessing information on the Internet. Today, the open nature of the World Wide Web underpins much of the global digital economy. Companies such as Google, Amazon, Meta, Netflix, Shopify, Stripe, Cloudflare, Microsoft, Apple, and millions of other businesses rely on technologies built on top of the open Web. Although Sir Tim Berners-Lee never patented or licensed his invention for personal profit, his decision enabled one of the largest waves of technological innovation, entrepreneurship, e-commerce, digital marketing, software development, online education, and social networking in history.
