The Dark Fiber Listening Network

From a philosophical point of view this becomes interesting. We are getting better and better about strengthening weak inference mechanisms into actionable information. Yet at the same time we are getting less and less able to act properly in response to overt macro events. Let's not get carried away with cleverness while the house is burning down.

In the U.K. this is being used to detect leaks in the mains water supply using fibre to the premises

This is also being used in high voltage transmission lines to measure wind speed and direction. The idea is that a lot of lines already have fiber on it, and upcoming regulations will allow transmission lines to carry more current if there is sufficient wind for cooling, allowing for dynamic line rating

A prominent oil and gas company uses “fiber fencing” around the perimeter of their campus. If an intruder decides to jump the fence, they can see in the command center where along the fence the vibration came from. Pretty cool.

Accurate and well put. In Saint-Barthelemy I deployed DAS to track yachts anchoring in restricted areas, and dinghys coming ashore. It's becoming mainstream, has so many use-cases…

I work in rail, and we had an accident where an engineer got killed due to a earth avalanche. We are now developing a warning system for avalanches with the dark fiber we have by the rail.

All this unused "dark fiber" and the ISP tells me I have no hope of ever getting fiber to my house. Stuck with weak signal cellular for internet or pricey satellite.
