If you try to squeeze them open with standard slip-joint pliers, they almost always twist, slip off, and snap shut. Instead of buying an expensive pair of specialized locking hose clamp pliers, this mechanic uses a brilliantly simple DIY hack! By threading a heavy-duty plastic zip tie through the metal tangs of the clamp and using a small steel nut as a spacer, you can simply pull the zip tie tight. The plastic band safely compresses the heavy spring open, allowing you to easily slide the rubber hose off the metal fitting without smashing your knuckles!

The issue isn’t the clamp, it’s the inconveniently tight and out of reach spots they’re always in. I promise you the next time I’m fighting one of these it will be harder to get an nut to stay long enough in one spot to get a zip tie through it rather than keeping at it with a rusty pair of needle nose pliers
Every mechanic knows how to work a pair of pliers properly enough to not be driven mad by a hose clamp. The only people who got driven mad by hose clamps are those that don’t know how to function properly.

Always replace these with jubilee clips
At Lowe’s they sell hose craftsman hose clamp pliers for 20 bucks they’re ratcheting to so they’ll lock in place while you slide it off. They’re a life saver.
