Astro must have really loved and trusted Nicole. Horses are still prey animals by nature and they're sensitive to extreme stress, which can trigger stuff like fatal heart attacks and aneurysms. The fact he was trapped for so long in the cold mud, but didn't injure himself struggling or even suffer any health problems afterwards means he must have been totally calm throughout the whole thing, no doubt because he trusted Nicole to rescue him.

She was like "oh no, I've seen this movie. Not on my watch."
