Grew up in Lagos, Ng. It was always about the starving kids in Somalia. "FINISH YOUR FOOD! Don't you know there are children in Somalia that have not eaten?!"

What's weird to me is that that almost never works. My parents would say that as if it was going to change how full I felt or how much I dislike mushrooms.

I can confirm that Africa is "so big," per my sources.

This reminds me of the "Yankee" definition map where it shows which states of the US believe Yankee has what definition (like people from California believe it describes someone from the Northeast, someone from Pennsylvania thinks it describes someone from New England, someone from New England thinks it describes someone from Vermont, and Vermonters have some weird definition for it that's the odd one out, making it obvious that is in fact the state everyone else's view of the word is talking about)

I always just felt like they should just give my food to the starving children. I don't know why they thought making me an accessory to their cruelty would somehow change how I felt about broccoli

I wish they would've just told us "I don't want you waisting food it's expensive" children are smart they know what's going on even if they can't connect the dots all the way yet

My grandmother said this to me ones and it resulted in me trying to cram a half eaten sandwich in an envelope where I had written "Africa" since I was still full but also didn't wan't to waste the food.

"Finish your food, there's a starving sibling right next to you who could use that food!"

Same, growing up my mom used to tell me about the starving children in Ethiopia, we r from Algeria btw 😅 Now she tells me abt the ppl who got a job n r homeless at the same time in france and the USA 😅

I worked with a dude from Afghanistan and I was shocked when he said his mom would say "finish your food, there's starving kids in Africa". Didn't know that phrase was global.
