Six thousand people go to work every morning at the Nissan plant in Sunderland. It's the biggest car factory in Britain, it's been building Qashqais and Jukes on Wearside for forty years — and right now roughly half of it is standing idle. So Nissan has signed an agreement with a Chinese company to fill the empty line. From 2027, the biggest car factory in this country could be building Chery cars. Chinese brands took 15% of the British new car market in the first half of 2026 — around 175,000 cars. Two years ago BYD had only just launched here and Chery Group didn't exist in Britain at all. The Jaecoo 7 was the best-selling car in the country outright in March, ahead of the Ford Puma and the Nissan Qashqai. In July, Chery on its own outsold Honda and Mazda combined. In this video we count down ten British car plants and what happened to every one of them — Ford Bridgend, Honda Swindon, Vauxhall Luton, Jaguar Castle Bromwich, MG Rover Longbridge, and the JLR sites at Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton. Number one is still open. That's the problem. Longbridge is the part most people have forgotten, and it's the reason Sunderland matters. A British car company fails. A Chinese company buys the badge. The factory carries on for a while building cars for the new owner. Then it stops. Twenty-one years later, MG is the largest Chinese brand in Britain and outsells the British brands it used to be. We also cover the Freelander — a British nameplate now licensed to Chery as a standalone Chinese brand, with the UK explicitly in scope — and what the Sunderland deal would actually mean if it goes ahead. Including the case for it, which Unite has made publicly and which deserves a fair hearing. Note: the Nissan–Chery agreement is a non-binding memorandum of understanding. Discussions are ongoing and it may not happen at all. Did you work at one of these plants, or did somebody in your family? Type the number one in the comments. UK Politicians are not interested in manufacturing. They think an economy can thrive without it. Strange isn't it that the biggest and strongest economies in the world are all strong manufacturing based economies. Its the Politicians we need to get rid of.
Geely must make sure what there are doing because investing in Britain is great risk , the future government can confiscate the works and technology at any time like steel works, Huawei g5,Hinkley point. and Russia reserve money.
China must have learnt how the brits back stabbed several project they agreed and commit formerly such as Nuclear Elevtricity, 5 G Hiawei and Steel Project also how the Brits sold drug in China 1840. Belueving the king of colonizer with divide et impera policy is a very risky business
I bought an Omoda 9 having owned a Range Rover Velar and a year down the line have absolutely no regrets, higher spec cheaper insurance so I’m happy.
Once the plant is up and doing well.. the British government will snatch it away just like they did the British steel. They just steal it away. Just like the Dutch stealing away Nxperia from China after the plant invested heavily and started making profit. They are pirates and robbers like they did in the olden days. Never change... DNA.
I live in NZ and have had an MG ev for over 3 years, and it has been faultless in that time, so cheap to fill up at home. I also have a Ranger wildtrak for the tough stuff, but it costs me more than 10 times as much to run. Needless to say when I pop down to the shops to get the milk, I use the MG.
The UK should be glad. This way you can buy a Chinese car made in the UK instead of made in China. Count that as a win, afterall Nissan was Japanese and foreign as well so what's the problem? Either that or another closed car plant.
You forgot to mention that Jaguar Land rover is now an Indian brand not a British brand and that was the Indian owner who had this Cyber attack same as what happened to Apple manufacturing plant in India. 😮😮😮 I think you should keep any eye on an Indian Iphone soon or an indian landrover 😅😅😅or similar brand. 😅😅
People don't have common sense anymore. If jobs are being lost and people are going hungry, no one should be bothered about what they are doing and for whom as long as they are employed. China still manufactures iPhones, Boeing aircraft, Cartier, and other foreign stuff. They look at these just as business arrangements and not as loss of national pride. When Japan set up its manufacturing in the UK in the 1980s, people must have been happy for the jobs they created. Why are they cribbing now when much bigger Chinese companies want to enter the UK markets and offer jobs?
this new business model is a win win situation. I would not hesitate to buy a Bristish make Chinese car.
China should stop investing in UK or Europe. UK Europe governments will seize the Chinese manufacturing plants and rob China modern technologies for some make up national security interests when it start making money.
Britain since WW2 has had foreign companies built cars here . So only difference is that now it is a Chinese car company.
Britain love migration from Africa soon or later they will kick you out, Britain government is extremely anti China soon or later UK will blackmail China and BYD.
Doesn't bode well that SAIC has chosen Spain for building MGs in Europe rather than Britain, the spirtual home of MG. Personally I think Britain should match the EU tarrif on SAIC cars since not doing so has been of no benifit to the country at all.
Oh dear! Friday cars everyday for Chery.
The off putting factor in buying an EV is the insurance... the risk of having it written-off after minor damage is concerning.
British workers will learn about quality production practices from the Chinese, that is a plus for the workers
Jaguar is dead because of Indian ownership. MG is growing fast under Chinese ownership. I have confidence on the Chinese brands a lot more.
1. I worked at Longbridge from 1972 until 4 months after the administrators came in. At about 7:57 on your video I believe that it is my Mini (F63AUE) being driven out of Q Gate. Also, you might like to note that the Landrover Defender is built at Jaguar Land Rover's manufacturing plant in Nitra, Slovakia, not Solihull as you have mentioned. We built the Honda Ballard (similar to the first Rover 200) and Honda Concerto (similar to the later Rover 200) at the Longbridge plant in the 1980s and 1990s.
1 work for Jaguar for 37 years at Brown's Lane and castle brom
