I sailed on DDs with mechanical plot tables. They worked well. The major downfall was recognized in the missile age… you can’t data link a position, heading, and velocity of a target to another unit. Has to be done by message or voice, which imposes time latency, errors, and undermines PK of a cooperative unit’s weapons firing in the blind.
