What makes this stunt incredibly risky is that just a week before filming this scene, McConaughey was stung during prep work and discovered he was severely allergic to bees. His face swelled up so badly he couldn't be on camera for five days. The crew had to move the massive bee stunt to the very last day of production just in case he got stung again and had to be hospitalized. Fortunately, by staying completely calm and avoiding sudden movements, he did not get stung once during the 40-minute shot.
