The funniest thing about a herd breed staring like that is that is how the intimidate sheep (or whatever animal they’re herding) into going a certain way. Thats why you see them crotch down and a stare at the herd when they are working; they’re basically pretending to be a predator to scare the herd into going the right way. So when a herd dog does it to human they’re basically squaring up to try and bully you into feeding or playing with them.

Add to the smartness, our last Border Collie looked full blooded but I did a DNA because she acted different from all our past borders. She had Blue Heeder with Border Collie. It answered all my questions, she was an amazing dog. Told us what to do all the time. Love my Border Collies but she was very special never have an other like her.

My heeler mix does this. If staring at you doesn't work, he'll start interacting with the environment. I've woken up to pillows and dog toys being thrown at me. One time he made direct eye contact with me and pushed one (1) ornament off the Christmas tree in protest.

When they're staring at you, they're trying to telepathically impart knowledge of how to better serve them, hehe. 🎉😅

I still have a fear of heelers because one at the shelter I volunteered at decided that I needed to die specifically. She knew whenever I set foot on the property and would lose her mind trying to get to me to enact violence. Never figured out why. She didn’t act that way toward anyone else, including people who looked like me.

I had a heeler as a single gal going to college and into my twenties. He was the smartest dog I’ve ever known. Fiercely protective of both myself and my cat. Very sweet, very intense, super funny and easily trained. Just a wonderful guy. They do need a ton of exercise and I live in a Colorado mountain town on some property in the forest so he was happy here. Wonderful doggos ❤❤❤❤❤❤

My favorite genre is people getting working dogs and not working them and then wondering why they tweak out

Heelers where specifically bred and trained by Austrailian ranchmen to ONLY take commands from their masters so that they can't get distracted from their herding responsibilities. This is why you will notice your heeler at home will be VERY stand offish from anybody other than you and maybe your nuclear family. They often have a very small "pack" of humans that you could probably count on one hand. I have found that if you want a person you know to be accepted into your heeler's "pack", you must leave your heeler alone with that person for a couple days. The heeler will realize that inorder to get food they must rely and trust that sole person ( without you being there) and pretty quickly "adopt" you into their circle of trust.❤
