Interesting fact: Sony dropped CD support on the PS4 and PS5 (keeping only DVD and Blu-ray), while the same-generation Xbox One and Xbox Series X still support CDs.

The funny thing is that older DVD players would score pretty high on this list. The DVD player I had 20 years ago had a nice front panel display, controls on front, a full range of inputs and outputs. Some time around the time that DVD player was made, everybody cheaped out and dropped those CD-oriented features.
My assumption is that these people saying "just buy a Sony DVD/Blu-ray player" might be woefully out of date on the current state of Sony's lineup, or implicitly telling you to buy used. There was a time that Sony made video playback devices that had buttons and nice VFD displays, and that's probably what they pictured in the mind's eye, especially if they still see them cropping up at the thrift stores.

Basically most modern electronics are a let-down.
Gapless playback is a must for me, but one thing I’d like to know is how many devices play “pre-gap”. There are a few albums that can be rewound past the beginning of the CD to uncover hidden tracks 😮
We tried to have one built ( shortly before covid, for europes biggest electronics retailer) as a „market entry cheap no name cd player“ at the 29€ pricepoint. Nobody could or would build it…. Until we decided on a stripped down dvd player with an adjusted for music remote. Basically to bring people to playing their cd collection again without spending a fortune. Moral of the story: it was way cheaper to repurpose a dvd player than having a cd mechanism built in.
Gapless playback is a must, how else do you listen to the Dark Side of The Moon?
I find this all deeply tragic. We will be left with subscriptions and at the mercy of whatever price the few companies providing that service ask.
