so an extra part of this not being mentioned, basically, this works because compression checks for repeating patterns in data, so if you have the same file in two different folders in a zip, is actually holding that one file and notes that it goes into both folders. so, when someone makes a zip with ten folders that have ten folders each inside, that have ten folders each inside, that have ten folders...(times no one knows) all with 10 of the same file at the ends of AAAAAALL those folder branches, and then compresses, the data gets folded up again and again and again and again into a modest lil spring-loaded file

For those who don't understand, a ZIP bomb works like this because ZIP partially uses DEFLATE compression, which compresses repeated data. And ZIP bombs contain very big data which is repetitive, so the ZIP totals to very little. And since NTFS (Windows's file system) doesn't use DEFLATE, the hard drive gets filled with repetitive data

*FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY* One common way to make zip bombs without cooking your own PC is to go into photoshop and create a canvas that’s like 9 bajillion pixels by 9 bajillion pixels, and export that as a zip file.

This isn't effective on most modern systems because modern decompression tools look at the uncompressed size (which is stored in the central directory of every modern zip file, and if it's not there the system will either be completely unable to extract it or give you a ton of warnings), and if the uncompressed size is larger than the available space on your computer it will simply tell you that you don't have enough space. Antiviruses will also throw a fit btw
Kaboom? Yes rico, KABOOM!
