the "magic sauce" is also how Valve managed to get HDMI CEC working with HDMI 2.0
also the desktop mode issue can be fixed by going into steam big picture mode setting and turning off the button that says start in steam big picture mode...theirs is no need to delete any files for this to work
SteamOS was so good on the deck, that I sold my laptop and the Steam Deck in desktop mode was my daily driver in college.

Btw if booting into KDE straight up make sure to put gaming mode as backup. else if kde crash youll end up stuck and have to boot a recovery image to fix it from here. (ask me how i know)
If they're going to offer a desktop mode, they'll have change it so you can boot directly into the desktop or at a minimum, remember which mode you last used.
It seems like high praise if your biggest problem with an operating system is "I only started having issues after altering the source code."

a coworker and I have discussed the general release of the Steam Machine: the REAL draw isn't the hardware (though it is nice that everything just works on initial startup), it's Steam releasing a competitor to Windows. I have been using SteamOS as a daily driver for a hot minute at this point, and absolutely love it.
"sudo steamos-session-select plasma-wayland-persistent" would have fixed your desktop issue in a more SteamOS way ^^
I currently have an AMD PC in my living room and now I am thinking I might convert it to Steam OS for gaming.

Seems like a lot of these issues could have been resolved by just using Bazzite.
I mean.... Bazzite exists. I'm starting to use that as my daily driver on a PC I build just for Steam.
