Maybe it would be more useful, if it can be used as a brake to compress the sping, and lock it in this state, until released with a trigger.

It would be super useful in hilly regions if you could use that spring to compress when you brake or go downhill and let it unwind to boost speed when you go uphill. Kind of mechanical regenerative braking.

Need to compact it back down when breaking?

Add a flywheel and a spring brake lock
